Sea Change – See Change 2008 – 2011 (Part one) A start-up Installation. The multi-media installation consists of electrical wires, bulbs, photographs, drawings and scientific data.
The project “Sea Change - See Change” is artistic research. The spread of non-indigenous species (also called “alien species”) to new geographic areas is worldwide an increasing phenomenon. In later years it is also an important issue in the Baltic Sea, the Gulf of Finland and the Gulf of Bothnia. “Invasive organisms” in the water such as the “American comb jelly”, or the “spiny water flea” are mainly transported with ballast water in big cargo ships into areas where they could not have spread by natural means.
If the conditions in the new location are suitable for the species, they may disturb the local ecosystem, develop pest-like characteristics and cause socio-economic problems in the recipient area. “Invasive species” are indicators of an ever increasing global trade.
The consequences of “invasive species” are almost invisible.
The issue of “invasive species” is highly complex and concerning the entire Baltic Sea. The project therefore requires multilayered, transdisciplinary research. The artist aims to co-operate with scientific research institutes, local stakeholders and nongovernmental Organisations NGO’s from all 9 countries having coastal zones to the Baltic Sea: Finland, Estonia, Russia, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Sweden, Denmark.
The project develops its own culture of time. That is what underpins the aesthetics of sustainability. The artistic research will result 2011 in a multimedia Installation that addresses the complexity of the issue “Alien species”.
